(2013) 3(2), 171–182 summary Ghrelin is an orexigenic hormone released from the stomach that stimulates the release of growth hormone and has been shown to inhibit the release of insulin. Evidence from rodent models of diabetes and perturbed ghrelin signaling suggest that ghrelin plays a role in regulating glucose homeostasis. Ghrelin may act as a paracrine signaling factor within the pancreas in the control of b‐cell function. Ghrelin levels are reduced in obesity and diabetes, and insulin resistance has been linked to mutations in the ghrelin precursor molecule. Ghrelin appears to exert antioxidant and antiapoptotic effects upon endothelial and nervous tissue, and may help to protect against diabetes‐related disease. The role of ghrelin in the development of diabetes and its potential utility as a treatment for some of the effects of diabetes remain unclear and require further study.

Diabetes, Ghrelin And Related Peptides: From Pathophysiology To Vascu- lopathy

Ghrelin and obestatin are two different peptides originated from the same gene isolated in the stomach. Numerous actions have been described where these two peptides are implicated in metabolism, appetite regulation, glucose levels regulation, and a wide range of systemic effects. In this article, we summarize (1) the cellular receptors implicated in ghrelin and obestatin effects; (2) the role ...

Serum resistin a biomarker of type II diabetes development

Background: Resistin and ghrelin are hormones that have roles in the glucose and lipid homeostasis and weight regulation. Human studies regarding resistin and ghrelin in diabetic patients are scarce, especially in the cases of normotensive and non-obese patients. This study was designed to illuminate some of the missing points. Methods: Eighty diabetic patients and eighty healthy individuals par...

Ablation of Ghrelin O-Acyltransferase Does Not Improve Glucose Intolerance or Body Adiposity in Mice on a Leptin-Deficient ob/ob Background

Type 2 Diabetes is a global health burden and based on current estimates will become an even larger problem in the future. Developing new strategies to prevent and treat diabetes is a scientific challenge of high priority. The stomach hormone ghrelin has been associated with playing a role in the regulation of glucose homeostasis. However, its precise mechanism and impact on whole glucose metab...

Effect of Ghrelin on Glucose-Insulin Homeostasis: Therapeutic Implications

Ghrelin is a 28-amino-acid peptide that displays a strong growth hormone- (GH-) releasing activity through the activation of the growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR). The first studies about role of ghrelin were focused on its orexigenic ability, but despite indisputable pharmacological data, the evidence for a physiological role for ghrelin in the control of appetite is much less clear....

The Role of Hormones in Glucose Homeostasis and Diabetes Treatment

Diabetes mellitus is a very common disorder caused by high levels of sugar in the bloodstream. It is caused by problems with the hormone named insulin and also be affected or precipitated by other hormones. It has long been known that several peptide hormones have significant impact on the regulation of glucose homeostasis. Hormone-based therapies effectively lead to prevent or slow the progres...
